This primer is specifically designed to be used on tile and melamine surfaces and after the tiles have been primed, nearly all paints will adhere to it.

Using this tile primer also means you have free reign over the colour of your tiles. This step is super important. If you skip this step, your paint may not adhere to the cupboards. Mask any tricky edges or anything you do not wish to paint, such as the hinges. Dark granite was the trend a few years ago and many houses opted for darker worktops. Image on the left This has most certainly changed and current trends are for neutral and lighter colours such as grey and white. Image on the right is a recent kitchen makeover, replacing both worktops and doors.

Removing solid granite worktops and replacing with a new solid surface can be difficult. The worktop is bonded into place by a strong adhesive. This generally means that once the worktop is removed the cabinet underneath is damaged and will need replacing. Customers who do not want the expense or disruption of ripping out their old kitchen cabinets and replacing them in order to change the worktop are best suited to a kitchen makeover company who have the capability of creating an overlay to fit directly over the current granite worktop.

Due to the strength and stability of granite, it is the perfect surface to cover. Another thing to consider is maintenance. Ensure when you are researching the material you require you understand fully how much care and maintenance that material needs in order to stay looking its best. Overlay companies use engineered stone which is an agglomerate that looks like the real stone but comes with benefits which include nonporous, stain and scratch-resistant, mould and mildew-resistant, and easy to maintain including no need to reseal.

Technically the answer is Yes. That is one of the main qualities of worktop overlays. As long as you have a strong, stable worktop, thin granite , quartz or recycled glass surfaces can be fitted directly on top. As mentioned above, granite worktops are perfect for a new updated overlay due to the strength and stability of the material. Mark the edges of any areas that you need to cut out of the sheet such as sinks or faucets on top of the sheet.

The marked lines over sinks or other obstructions should be as exact as you can make them so the sheet fits over them properly. Cut along the marked lines with a circular saw. Use a circular saw to make even cuts to cut the sheet down to size to fit over the worktop with a small overhang.

Cut out any other areas you marked to create openings for sinks or anything else you need to accommodate. Apply a layer of contact cement on the worktop and the back of the sheet. Wait about minutes for the contact cement to get sticky before you adhere it. You can find contact cement at hardware stores and online. Place dowels on top of the countertop spaced out about 3—5 inches 7. After you apply the contact cement to the worktop, spread out wooden dowels over the surface to serve as a buffer between the worktop and the laminate sheet so you can line it up.

The wooden dowels will not stick to the contact cement and will allow you to line up your sheet before you install it. You can find dowels at home improvement stores and online. Set the laminate sheet on top of the dowels and line it up with the worktop. Remove the dowels and press the laminate onto the worktop. Start at 1 end of the sheet and take out 1 dowel at a time. As you remove the dowels, press the laminate sheet onto the worktop so the adhesives bond evenly.

Work your way from 1 side to the other to roll the sheet onto the worktop. Trim the edges with a trim router and file them down with a metal file.

A trim router is a handheld device that uses a small bit to cut even edges. Fit a flush-trim bit into the router and place it on the edge of the laminate sheet. Move the router down the worktop to cut off the excess sheet so you have a flush and even edge. Take a metal file and hold it at a degree angle against the edge of the worktop.

Warning: File down the sharp edges of the laminate sheet to prevent cuts or scrapes. Method 3. Use tile to add a textured surface to your worktop.

Tiles can be laid over any type of existing worktop to update and recover them. Choose squares of tile to lay over your worktop. For example, you could go with rough-hewn granite tile for a rustic look or a flat and smooth black or white tile for a modern aesthetic.

Choose squares of tile that are the same size, shape, and design. You can purchase tile at home improvement stores and online. Measure the dimensions of the worktop and cut thin cement board to size. Use a ruler or tape measure to find the width and the depth of the worktop. If you have a sink, measure the sink so you can account for it. Cut out the openings for any sinks or other obstructions you need to fit the board over. Mix together mortar according to the directions on the packaging.

Use a bag of quick mixing mortar and combine it with water in a bucket according to the directions on the packaging. The mortar should have the consistency of a thick paste or mud. You can purchase quick mix mortar at hardware stores and online. Take a hand trowel and scoop out the mortar from the bucket. Spread an even layer over the entire surface of the worktop. Use the hand trowel to create ridges in 1 direction so the layer of mortar is consistent.

Screw the cement board onto the worktop. Make sure the edges of the board line up with the edges of the worktop and is pushed flush against the wall. Space the screws out 6 inches 15 cm from each other. You can find backer board screws at home improvement stores and online. Scoop more of the mortar of the bucket and spread it over the surface of the cement board. Use the trowel to create an even layer with ridges that run in 1 direction for consistency. Lay the tiles and push them into the mortar to secure them.
