Dry, itchy and inflamed scalp is not good for rooting ideally strong hair in general. Besides causing the thinning of your hair, it also leads to discomfort, either with pain, dandruff buildup or itchiness. There are medications that lead to hair loss and because you have dreadlocks, does not exempt you from those side effects.

Your hair needs water. Yes, water like a plant needs water. You yourself need to drink a lot of water. Traction alopecia is a hair loss condition caused by force and tension applied to the roots of your hair. As the hair weakens over time it either breaks or simply falls out from thinning and thinning.

Alopecia most commonly affects the hair around the temples, right above and the sides of the head as well. Once my dreads reached shoulder length, they were always in the way when washing around my neck. So what did I do? I started a new bad habit that I took outside with me as well. I was taking one single loc from behind each ear to tie a knot in the back of my head around the rest of my hair too keep them out of the way.

Do Not do this! After a few months I noticed the locs thinning where I was tying the knot everyday and eventually they broke. I hate wearing a shower cap and my hair was growing too long for any caps I was comfortable with so, I chose the next two locs closest to the broken ones to damage next. The thought of drying your dreads can make you postpone a few washes, trust me I know. Washing is simple but drying takes forever. Your locs are not a beach towel or wash cloth that you can just wring out at will.

Picking out lint in your locs can become a bad habit. I stopped doing it earlier in my loc journey because I saw that along with the lint, I was taking strands of my locs out with. If this becomes a habit, it is probably the easiest way to thin your own hair. Using your fingers and finger nails to pick out the lint will always thin your locs out.

If your dreads are thinning, the absolute worst thing you can do is cause more tension on them by twisting or pulling. Use the list above to try and place a finger on exactly what is causing your hair to thin. Besides tension, there are a few things you need to avoid: heavy products, hair dye or bleach, stress, ponytails. I believe that the best way to physically repair locs is to crochet them with a needle. My locs did not take well to adding hair, sewing in more and repeating.

By crocheting you can compress the loc and shorten the stretched length where you see thinning. If you are anything like me, you have an emotional attachment to your locs and crocheting I feel is the most natural technique to physically thicken locs where they are thinning.

It looks and feels the most natural in my opinion as well. Dreadlocks break off when the tension applied to them is greater than the resistance to remain intact. Usually it happens after thinning significantly and then they are too weak to resist breaking from the tension.

The tension can meet the breaking point if a dread is not thinning but enough force is applied. It can also meet the breaking point if gravity is the only force causing tension but two halves of a single loc are connected by one last strand of hair. Absolutely keep any locs that fall out. Not to store in a bag and stress like I did, but to reattach them eventually.

November 24, at am. Thanks for reading the article! I would suggest reaching back out to them to inquiry when you should come back. April 30, at pm. I stumbled across forum. Thank you so much. But I also realized that the ones doing this were either thin hairs from the beginning thats gotten thicker, combined locs, or in an area that had color.

I was experiencing thinning and now I know why! Again, thank you! January 22, at am. Barbara J Benefield. July 30, at am.

January 20, at pm. Hi, thank you for your info. My locs are thinning really bad and I have a few bald spots. I believe it is a combination of stress, diet, genetics, menopause, and tension hair styles. I want to keep my locs had them for over 14 years and just recently went to someone who combined a lot of them to keep them from breaking off and interlocked them very loosely from the roots to not add more stress. And recommended that I not shampoo for 3 months to give my hair a break.

Was combining them a good ideal and to start interlocking? January 21, at pm. I also do not agree with not cleansing your scalp and locs for such an extended period of time because the weight of weekly product usage not removed cleansed for 12 weeks will only make the locs heavier.

I do however agree with interlocking to help to build the integrity of the locs if it is done properly. April 7, at pm.

Hi thank you for this great article. I currently have Sisterlocks 10 months. Also, I believe with my retightening schedule 7 weeks it places too much tension on these small thin strands.

What are your thoughts or opinion about combining Sisterlocks to combat thinning and breakage? May 17, at am. Thinning and breakage is not normal. So I would first question that Sisterlocks Consultant. And to address your question, combining Sisterlocks can help with thinning because it would strength them but it would have to be done properly. It would combined them improperly it could cause more tension at the roots. May 20, at am. Thank you for the valuable information. Instead of proper budding some of my end are thinning forming knots and then breaking off.

Is there anything I can do to stop this? My locs are also very very very dry. May 27, at pm. At this point it is unlikely that you can stop the shedding because that is the state that your hair was locked it in. You can trim the ends to help them to seal evenly. Also, that Sisterlocks Starter shampoo is very drying because it is so concentrated. Robin Wheeler. October 29, at am. February 12, at am. Currently I am experiencing hair loss on my hairline. It has been going on for quite a few years maybe 3 or 2. Over these years I have switched hair products from waxes, to gels and from gels to essential oils. I am even considering dropping my hairstylist and doing my own hair. February 11, at pm. November 14, at am. I have thin spots in a few of the locs along my hairline due to post-partum hair shedding. I lost a ton of hair with my oldest son — when my hair was loose. Two months after my twins were born, I started my locs.

But I could not totally avoid the inevitable. Even though my hair was loccing, the shedding interfered with the loc formation. Thankfully the locs are not so thin that they will break. But it is a noticeable difference. So for women, realize that hormonal changes and imbalances can affect your locs as well.
